" ... in the 2013 edition of 'Southern Cultures,' Tony Russell reported that Turner was white, hailing from McComb, Mississippi. He served in the 81st Infantry Division during WWI, was gassed in France, and spent six years in a government hospital in San Francisco. While there, he started playing guitar and developed the method of using a bottleneck to fret instead of a steel bar or knife. The information came from an article on Turner in the Hattiesburg American from 1927" (April 14, p. 9, to be even more precise) (Cary Ginell @ facebook)
