In 1916, an argument with his brother-in-law resulted in a gunshot to Howell's leg, which led to amputationand his nickname, "Peg Leg." In 1952 he lost his remaining leg to diabetes.
This is not "Peg Leg Howell 1963"as claimed in Bastin 1986, between pp. 160 & 161but Fiddlin' Joe Martin (photographer: George Mitchell)
